Why a Period Tracker Does Not Need an Account

Most period trackers ask for an email, but cycle tracking works without one. What accounts are really for, what they expose and how a no-account tracker works.

Why a Period Tracker Does Not Need an Account

A period tracker does not need an account to work. Logging dates, symptoms and predictions can all happen on your phone. Accounts exist mainly so that a company can store your data on its servers, sync it between devices or contact you, and each of those links your intimate health history to your identity.

What an account is usually for

When an app asks you to sign up, it is usually for one or more of these reasons:

  • Server storage: your history is kept on the company's computers instead of only on your phone.
  • Sync: the same data appears on several devices.
  • Marketing: an email address lets the company send newsletters or offers.
  • Analytics: an account makes it easier to connect your behaviour across sessions and devices.

Only the first two are about features you might want. Neither is needed to track your cycle.

What an account can expose

Health data about menstruation, sexual activity and pregnancy is among the most sensitive information you have. In the EU, the GDPR treats health data as a special category that needs extra protection.

With an accountWithout an account
Your cycle history is linked to your email or phone numberThere is no identity attached to your records
A copy usually exists on a serverRecords can stay only on your device
Policy changes or a breach at the company can affect your dataThere is no account database to breach
Deleting your data means asking the companyDeleting the app or its data removes it from your device

What you give up without an account

There are real trade-offs. Without an account, your data does not sync between devices automatically, and if you lose your phone you need your own exported backup to recover it. Some people value sync more; others prefer to keep intimate data off servers entirely.

How a no-account tracker works

Bloom Private is built without accounts. You open the app and start logging: no email, no password, no phone number. The app has no servers, so your records stay on your iPhone, protected by iOS encryption, unless you choose to export them or turn on Apple Health.

To protect your history, you can lock the app with Face ID or Touch ID and create a full backup encrypted with AES-256, which you keep wherever you like. The App Store privacy label says "Data Not Collected".

If you only need a quick calculation, our Try our free period calculator works in your browser without any sign-up either. For a first-week setup, read how to start tracking without an account.
