Your fertile window is the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation. After stopping hormonal contraception you have no recent cycle history, so a calendar estimate is only a starting point for the first few months. Body signs such as cervical mucus, LH tests and basal body temperature show more reliably when ovulation is near in those early cycles.
How the fertile window is calculated
Sperm can survive up to five days in the body, and the egg lives for about a day after ovulation. That gives a window of about six days. Ovulation usually happens 10 to 16 days before your next period, so a calculator estimates it like this:
- Take your average cycle length, for example 30 days.
- Subtract a typical luteal phase of 14 days: ovulation around day 16.
- Count back five days: fertile window around days 11 to 16.
Our fertile window calculator does this for you.
Why it is harder after birth control
The calculation depends on knowing your cycle length, and after stopping the pill, patch, ring or injection you do not yet have that data:
- The first bleed is usually a withdrawal bleed, not a natural period, so it is not a reliable cycle start.
- The first cycles can be longer, shorter or irregular.
- After the injection, ovulation can take a year or longer to return.
For a first estimate based on the method you stopped, use our post-pill ovulation calculator.
Body signs that make the estimate more precise
| Sign | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Cervical mucus | Clear, slippery, stretchy mucus means ovulation is near |
| LH test | A positive test usually comes 24 to 36 hours before ovulation |
| Basal body temperature | A sustained rise confirms ovulation has already happened |
| Cervical position | Higher, softer and more open around ovulation |
Mucus and LH tests warn you before ovulation; temperature confirms it after. Used together over a few cycles, they show your real pattern.
Important limits
An estimated fertile window is not contraception. Calendar estimates are least reliable in the first months after stopping birth control, exactly when cycles are changing. If you do not want to get pregnant, use a contraceptive method and talk to a healthcare professional about your options.
Using Bloom Private after birth control
Bloom Private estimates your fertile window from day one and improves as you log cycles: the luteal phase is personalized after two cycles with detected ovulation. You can log cervical mucus, LH tests, basal body temperature and cervical position, and TTC mode (Premium) brings them together if you are trying to conceive. The app is not a contraceptive method.
Frequently Asked Questions
About six: the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation.
You can get an estimate, but it is less reliable at first because the first bleed is a withdrawal bleed and early cycles can be irregular. Body signs help more.
No. An estimated fertile window is not contraception. Use a contraceptive method if you do not want to get pregnant.
